Q: Is short-sightedness getting worse in children?

A: Yes, short-sightedness (myopia) is becoming more common worldwide. It is estimated that in 2050 every second person will be short-sighted! Increased near work, especially on electronic devices and reduced outdoor time are thought to play a role. Early detection allows for monitoring and there are now more options to slow down the progression which is called Myopia Management.

Q: Why do my eyes water even though they feel dry?

A: This is common in dry eye disease! When the eyes are dry, they are irritated and when the eyes are irritated, they may produce what are called reflex tears. However, these tears are watery and weak and do not properly lubricate the eye like it wants and needs. Treating the underlying dryness often reduces excessive watering.

Q: What is vision training?

A: Vision training (also called vision therapy) is a structured program of eye and brain exercises designed to improve how the eyes work together and how visual information is processed. It is commonly used to help with issues such as poor eye coordination, focusing difficulties, eye strain, and visual problems that affect reading, learning, sports performance, or recovery after concussion. The training is guided by an optometrist and tailored to the individual’s specific visual needs.

Q: How often should adults have an eye exam?

A: For most adults, an eye exam every one to two years is appropriate. More frequent visits may be needed if you have certain eye conditions, for example, Glaucoma, Keratoconus. If you have general health issues like diabetes, it is important to get your eyes checked every year! Or if you have visual issues like bluriness, itchy eyes, pain, flashing of light or dots before your eyes, then get them checked even sooner!!!

Q: What is myopia?

A: Myopia (nearsightedness) means you see things clearly up close, but objects far away—like road signs or a TV—look blurry. It happens when your eye is slightly too long, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it.
